David Hewitt has been a legendary name in the recording industry and pro audio business since 1970, having recorded and engineered an incredible array of talented artists in both live and studio settings across the world. Originally from Montana, his family moved constantly with each new deployment for his father, an Air Force pilot. The nomadic lifestyle of his military family gave David his affinity for the traveling life that would become an integral part of his future remote recording career. The years spent stationed in Europe and a love of sports car racing certainly helped prepare for building those remote trucks.
Hewitt got his start at Regent Sound Studios in Philadelphia before moving to New York, where he would soon take over the remote division of the Record Plant. It was there that he built the famed “Black Truck,” the first truly modern mobile recording studio, with which he captured many incredible live performances for artists from Aerosmith to Pink Floyd to ZZ Top.
Starting his own company, Remote Recording Services, Hewitt purchased the “Black Truck” to carry on his work with the biggest names in music. Several years later, following the tragic demise of the Black Truck, he built his next state-of-the-art mobile studio, the “Silver Truck” featuring the latest in analog and digital technology. An all digital “White Truck” followed, suited for mixing input-intensive modern television broadcasts. After selling the company, he continues to record and consult on a wide range of studio and live projects under the name Hewitt Remote Services.
David Hewitt is an 8-time TEC Award Winner and member of the TEC Hall of Fame. He has received dozens of gold and platinum records in addition to Cinema Audio Society and Grammy awards, not to mention his work on Emmy award-winning broadcasts.
His credits run across many genres and include everyone from Aretha to Zappa, Miles to MJQ, George Jones to Shania Twain, broadcasts from the Oscars to the Metropolitan Opera and film scores from Die Hard to Disney.
